Aiding Puerto Rico - Collection Drives Underway To Assist Devastated Island
Likewise, another effort is ongoing in the community to send aid to Puerto Rico. Hispanic Community Council President Max Martin said his organization is also leading an effort in Dunkirk, Jamestown and Russell, Pa. that will continue for two weeks in conjunction with the city of Dunkirk. The donations will be sent straight to Puerto Rico.

Hispanic Community Council of Chautauqua County president, with volunteers at the Dunkirk Salvation Army collecting donations to send to Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.  JAMESTOWN — Collections are ongoing all across Chautauqua County to provide relief to Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.  The Hispanic Community Council has partnered with the city of Dunkirk, Martin said, who will then make sure the items reach Puerto Rico. Martin said it is important to help fellow countrymen, as the unincorporated U.S. territory is a part of the United States. He said if aid does not get to the island, the people on the island will come here for help.

Community Spotlight for July 30-Aug. 6, 2017

Hispanic Comm. Council of Chaut. County President Max Martin

July 30th, 2017 12:13pm | Duration: 14:58

We get a fresh perspective on Chautauqua County's growing Hispanic population from Hispanic Community Council President and Chief Executive Officer, Max Martin. Martin tells our Terry Frank that about 99-percent of the Hispanic community members come from the troubled-territory of Puerto Rico, and those who come here are born with all the rights of American citizens, so they are -- in effect -- able to travel "state-to-state." He says they love the Jamestown-area for the education, and health care opportunities. However, he says there are still barriers including the language, good housing, and job opportunities. He urges people to give them a chance, and work with them for the betterment of the region. The Community Council is a passion and mission of Martin's... who supports the program with his own money, and other donations.

Community Spotlight for Sept. 11-18, 2016

Jennifer Gibson and Max Martin with Cultural Bridges Action Team.

September 11th, 2016 04:51pm | Duration: 14:58

This week, we talk with Jennifer Gibson and Max Martin from the Jamestown Strategic Planning and Partnerships Commission's "Cultural Bridges Action Team" to discuss to upcoming programs designed to bridge the cultural gap between Hispanics moving into the area, and other, long-time residents. This grew out of a meeting with pastors of several local Hispanic churches. There will be a program on September 22, and another over two days, October 14 and 15. for members of the Jamestown community. Martin and Gibson say there's a lot of misunderstanding, and the language barrier can be a big part of that. Many of the families are fleeing Puerto Rico, which is a U. S. Territory that's in dire financial shape, and, has accumulated a huge amount of debt.
